We personally have always used this as an excellent place for storing shoes. Hall tree itself is solid wood an appears to be made of mahogany as shown.
The bottom floor underneath the tree where the storage is has the original old plank style boards as shown. We do believe mirror to be original to the piece as well as all other features. On the back we did notice that two support board beams with screws and another square board had been added at some time in order to help increase the sturdiness and add to the life of the piece. Was a common practice for this time in history due to the high cost of purchasing wood. The hall tree itself measures 78 inches in height from bottom to the very top portion of the wood finial decorative piece in the middle. The piece is 29.75 inches in width when measuring the furthest points from left to right when facing. When measuring front to back the piece has a depth of 15 inches. Some partial history of this piece is known, as it originated in the Lexington Virginia area. We do know it spent some time in Pennsylvania in the 1930's and 40's, before going to the Atlanta area, and then back to Virginia and now it is in Kentucky. So it is a well traveled piece, sadly it can not talk, as we are sure it could tell some amazing stories!
