Very Old Pattens Antique Overshoes Carved Wood Leather Metal Possible Slave. Rare pare of antique pattens, overshoes. Each sole is made of a single piece of carved wood that has a lip at the back of the heel. Cut leather upper attached with wire and what look like staple nails or possibly just bent wire around the edge. It looks like layers of canvas or wool rug and tar?
Nailed on with a variety of nails. I'm guessing more nails were added later for reenforcement. The ball of the foot is the same and is finished with what I think is a piece of leather.
You can see a very similar pair of slave shoes in the Chicago History Museum's online archive item number 1920.1734a-b. Era: Unsure, best estimate is late 18th to mid 19th century. 3 1/2 outsole to top of upper. 4 width across the bottom at ball. Not recommended for use, only display / collection. No bad odors and relatively clean. Leather is hard and brittle. All items are hand selected by me and most are vintage or antique.
