Galileo would have been 60 years old when this portrait was done 394 years ago. Justus Sustermans also known as Giusto Sustermans, was a Flemish painter working in the Baroque style. He was born in Antwerp and died in Florence. Sustermans is chiefly notable for his portraits of members of the Medici family as he was their court painter. His work can be found in both the Palatina Gallery and the Uffizi Gallery in Florence, and in many other galleries around the globe.

During his lifetime he was fêted as the finest portrait painter in Italy. Galileo , known for his work as astronomer, physicist, engineer, philosopher and mathematician. Galileo has been called the "father of observational astronomy, the "father of modern physics", the "father of the scientific method, and even the "father of science". Stephen Hawkings was born 300 years to the day of Galileo's death and in a "Brief History Of Time" , Hawkings stated he identified with Galileo. This painting is magnificent, original 1624 oil on canvas mounted in a very old HUGE Gesso gilded frame. Overall frame is 37 inches tall and 32 wide. Visible canvas area is 22.5 in. Tall by 17.5 in. The canvas has been relined many years ago.
