Up for sale is my 19th. Century Blackman, Patent Improved, Cocus 8 key flute. This flute is in excellent overall condition, with just the two usual repairs to head and barrel, both of which have been expertly done, are sound, and virtually undetectable.
(see photo 3, which took several attempts to expose). The grain pattern and hue of the Cocus throughout the flute is particularly attractive. The flute is clearly stamped on four sections (see photo 9). The D profile rings and keys are made from Nickel Silver. The concentric turning of the crown and ball finial is another striking feature, shown in photo 12. The original embouchure is clean cut and crisp, as are the tone holes. All in all, making this a very desirable instrument.
This flute plays for me at A = 440 Hz. With a slide extension of 10 mm. Intonation is good for a period instrument, with no flat foot, and only the A needing a very slight lipping down to pitch. This small holed flute, is easy to fill, and plays with a sweet, yet clear and powerful tone. All keys are fully functional, including the low C pewters, which freely operate in a confident fashion.
